Students play an interactive quizzing game to learn about contractions. This set includes matching cards. For example, one card reads, “we will.” The matching card gives the contraction representative of that phrase, we’ll. Every student in class receives one card with either a phrase or a contraction. Students play Quiz-Quiz-Trade with their cards. The quizzing looks like this: Students put a hand up and find a partner. In the pair, one partner has the we will card and asks, “What is the contraction for ‘we will,’ and where does the apostrophe go?” The other partner responds. Then they quiz the other way. The other partner has a card with the contraction for “you are.” He asks, “What phrase does ‘you’re’ represent, and what letters are missing?” His partner responds. Students trade cards and find a new partner to quiz. After many rounds of pairing and quizzing, the teacher asks students to hurry and find their partner with their matching card. The repeated quizzing with multiple classmates makes the content super memorable. Your students have so much fun that they barely realize they’re learning!
