We are all familiar with and most of us use the structure, Call On One. (See box).

In his article Dr. Kagan provides the following:

  • The negative outcomes of Call On One.
  • Why Call On One is used so frequently.
  • Simple positive alternatives to Call On One.

In the last section of his article, Dr. Kagan details five Kagan Structures to replace Call On One:

  • PairShare
  • Timed PairShare
  • RallyRobin
  • RallyCoach
  • PairCoach

There you will find the steps and optional steps of each of the five structures, when to use each structure, the advantages of using each structure, as well as content examples and tips.

The biggest advantage of replacing Call On One with Kagan Structures is that in the same amount of time we use Call On One, having only two or three students giving one answer each, we can instead have every student in the class give several answers.

Why call on one when in the same amount of time we can call on everyone?
